I'm going to stand on my soap box for a bit. I don't usually like to do this - the standing on the soap box, but I'm so sick and tired of people blaming artists, musicians, authors, or whatever when it comes to violence. "My son was influenced to do it by Marylin Manson; he listened to that Satanic music, and he went off and killed that other boy." NO. It wasn't Marylin Manson or Stephen King or any other form of "dark" expression that caused your child to go and do harm to someone else. It was, instead, your own lackadaisical parenting and the lack of time that you put in with your child that caused the violent behavior to happen. If you would have spent more time with your kids instead of letting the tele or computer raise them, a lot of this shit wouldn't be happening. Grow up! Hold your kids responsible for their actions. It's one thing if they really don't know the difference between right and wrong, but don't blame whatever they may or mayn't do on whatever "dark" artist they have handy. It's bullshit.
Here's the thing: to be a responsible parent, you need to watch what your kid does. You need to be the one to censor them to things that are or aren't proper.
And, no matter what the hell you say, Marylin Manson, Cradle of Filth, Slayer, Metallica, Stephen King, Dean Koontz, whoever, isn't dark and Satanic. Seriously, grow up. It's a form of expression that doesn't have to be true. I write dark things - things that can be considered gory, gothic, down-right hellish, but that doesn't mean that I worship Satan. No. Instead, I'm a pretty devout Catholic. And I can't stand it when people hide behind God because they don't like something someone else says. "Judge not, least ye be judged yourself." Remember that, people?! Huh?! Remember that?! Don't hide behind God and religion because something disagrees with you. Teens today wouldn't be that rebellious if, instead of forbidding them, you let them experiment within legality. No drugs. No underage drinking. But where's the harm if they want to listen to Marylin Manson and read Stephen King?! I do. There are a ton of his songs that I love - If I was Your Vampire, Beautiful People, This is Halloween - and there are too many Stephen King books that I love to read or have read to mention here. But I don't go around beating people up, worshiping Satan, killing people. If I were to ever kill someone, I wouldn't hide behind the fact that I listen to the music that I listen to or read the things I read. If I did, it would be complete and utter bullshit. And I wouldn't let my lawyer use the fact that I listen to that music and read those books as a defense. It's bullshit.
Please excuse the language. But it really is complete and utter bullshit. I can't believe that people are still using that as a defense. It's ridiculous. It's sick. Don't associate killers with media like that. Seriously, don't. Grow the fuck up. I mean, I don't like to use language like that, but if I have to use it to shock you out of your dumbass stupor, then so be it. I'm sure that Stephen King and Marylin Manson and Danny Filth and whoever are very nice people and are torn up when they hear that you accuse them of murder for their ideas. They're ideas for the name of Jessum. Grow up. Be an adult and take responsibility for your actions. Don't blame music, movies, books, or art for your royal fuck-ups. Blame yourself.
